This Valentine’s Day eve, show your love for Dr. Andrea Monica Ortiz–interdisciplinary climate change scientist, honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Manila Observatory and Fellow at environmental consultancy Parabukas.

Monica graduated from the Philippine Science High School, after which she did her Bachelor’s degree in Biology (minor in Comparative Literature) at the University of Oregon. After finishing her undergraduate, she worked as a naturalist intern at Audubon Society, the world’s oldest birding society, at a farm and nature center in Ohio.

She then completed her double Masters in Environmental Science and Agriculture at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna.

Monica then worked at the Ateneo School of Government, Ateneo Biology Department and the Manila Observatory across various roles, teaching and engaging in hazards/climate change research. During this time, she did a lot of fieldwork, working with communities, LGUs—some of them in remote areas!

From the Philippines, Monica then went to the UK, pursuing her PhD at the University of Sheffield in Geography and completing a postdoctoral stint at the University College London. Currently, she is in Chile, working on ways to connect science across the Pacific Ocean.

Some fun facts about Monica:

  1. She used to be in a high school band with a fellow Pinoy Scientist, where they played Josie and the Pussycats covers!
  2. She used to have a longboard and would go snowboarding.
  3. She’s learning Spanish since she now lives in Chile. Usap tayo, este, hablemos!

Let’s all welcome Monica to the Pinoy Scientists fam! ????
