Closing out the month of October is Pinoy Scientist Jason Paolo Telles, a PhD candidate and Assistant Lecturer at the School of Media, Films and Journalism in Monash University, Australia.

Jason graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Journalism) from the University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio. He spent the years following at various media organizations, such as ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc., the National Broadcasting Network, the GMA Network Inc., and more. He then began his Master of Arts in Media Studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman, during which he also spent a few months as a Managing Editor and Journalist for the Nature Times, United States. Just before his Master’s degree, he began teaching at UP Baguio as an Instructor/Lecturer at the Department of Communication. His Master’s thesis on the Cultures of the People of the Cordillera in Radio Broadcasting was awarded the Most Outstanding Thesis in Media Studies in 2018.

Jason spent a few more years as an Assistant Professor at the UP Baguio Department of Communication where he also took on the role of Department Chair from 2020-2021. In 2022, he began his PhD in Monash University, Australia. He is now a PhD candidate for Film, Media, Communications and Journalism and received a scholarship from the Australian Research Council-funded project “Fields of Green: Sport as a Communications Platform for Environmental Issues and Sustainability”. He also works there as an Assistant Lecturer.

Some fun facts about Jason:

  • He was born and raised in San Fernando, La Union, and being Ilokano is a big part of who he is.
  • He loves taking photos of the places he visits and the animals he encounters, which he posts on Instagram. He’s not big on taking selfies though – any photo of him online was probably taken by a friend or helpful tour guide.
  • His favorite TV shows are Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Big Bang Theory. He usually watches sitcoms to unwind after a full day of thesis writing or work. Sometimes, he puts their audio in the background while writing to stay relaxed and focused.
