Here to usher in the -ber months is Pinoy Scientist John Sebastian Simon, a mathematician and Research Scientist at the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
John graduated Cum Laude from the University of the Philippines Baguio with a degree in Mathematics. He continued his studies at his alma mater, taking up his Master’s in Mathematics where he researched the optimal control for a fluid that is subject to the Navier-Stokes Equation. After graduation from his second degree, John spent some time at Tarlac State University as a lecturer. In 2019 however, he received a Doctoral Degree Scholarship under the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) program of the Japanese Government, allowing him to join Kanazawa University for his Doctor of Philosophy in Science Major in Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He continued his work with fluid modeling, analyzing shape design problems that involve fluid flows. He also received a University President’s Award for Academic and Research in 2022.
Following his time in Japan, John hopped on over to the Czech Republic where he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Czech Academy of Science. He recently started living in Austria as a Research Scientist for the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics.
Some fun facts about John:
- He is such a big fan of Brooklyn Nine-Nine that if someone shows him any photo from the show, he can most likely recall the premise of the episode it’s from and tell them exactly what is happening on the part of where the photo was taken.
- He’s really afraid of dogs (generally afraid of animals, but especially dogs). His friends even know how to form a barricade around him whenever they encounter one while walking on the street.
- People are always confused about which of his names, Simon or Sebastian, is the surname. So he just tells them to call him John.
