A man of many hats, next on our April roster is Pinoy Scientist Dr. Jabez Joshua Flores. An environmental scientist, he is a senior lecturer at UP Open University and the University of the Philippines Rural High School. He is also a fellow of the Next Generation One Health Philippines (NGOHP) Program, and project leader at Permaculture Research PH.
Jabez graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) but his love for coffee led to him working as a barista for 6 years. His interest in coffee led him to take a certificate course in Organic Agriculture from the University of the Philippines Open University, where he then completed his Master’s in Environment & Natural Resources Management. During this time, he started his work at Permaculture Research PH where he studies permaculture for ecosystem restoration. After, he pursued a PhD in Environmental Science from UPLB, during which he took an intensive PhD course from the International Association for Landscape Ecology in Italy.
After receiving his doctorate, Jabez started lecturing at UP Open University in conjunction with his work at Permaculture Research PH. In 2022, Jabez took on a number of roles, creating maps as a spatial data scientist at the Pure Earth Blacksmith Institute and starting his fellowship with One Health for the NGOHP Program at St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine. He also began lecturing at UP Rural High School, where he teaches to this day.
Some fun facts about Jabez:
- His scientific journey began with his love for coffee. After college, Jabez studied to become a barista in Dumaguete and Singapore and worked as a professional barista for the next 6 years. During that period, he competed, coached, and judged in national barista competitions. This eventually led him to organic agriculture.
- He cared for two pet goats, Twinkle and Bumblebee, during his van life and organic farming era.
- His former band, Juniper Face the Corner, released an EP in 2012 and their single “Fast Forward” was played on Jam 88.3.
