Joining us this week is nutrition scientist Isabel Martinez, who is currently studying her PhD in Nutrition, Dietetics and Food at Monash University, Australia.
Isabel graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Community Nutrition from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She then took up a Master of Science in Kinesiology (major in Exercise Physiology) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in the US. After graduating, she embarked on a Diploma in Sports Nutrition at the International Olympic Committee in Aberdeen, United Kingdom.
Over the years, Isabel has held various roles, including Assistant Corporate Nutritionist at Systems, Inc and a Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Illinois. Currently, she is a Research Officer and Teaching Assistant at Monash University, as well as an Academic Casual Staff at RMIT University.
Her doctoral thesis revolves around exploring gut training as a preventive and management strategy for exercise-associated gastrointestinal symptoms.
A few fun facts about Isabel:
- She doesn’t just make lab rats out of runners and tell them what to eat—she’s on a mission to help solve and manage pesky gut issues among athletes who find joy in swimming/cycling/running for hours and hours – herself included!
- She barely passed Math17 and Chem16 during her first year in undergrad, but she made it out alive of UPD and is still maxing out student status as a doctoral candidate.
- Earlier this year, she ran for 6 and half hours straight along the undulating Great Ocean Road that winds along Victoria’s southern coastline and ticked off “do an ultramarathon” on her bucket list. The experience definitely reflects the PhD rollercoaster ride!
