Taking over this time around is Marc Mapalo, a PhD student in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University.

Marc graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he did his research on tardigrades. During his Master’s in UPD, he was also a research associate working on producing recombinant malaria proteins and determining their immune response in mice.

Marc then pursued a second Master’s degree, this time undertaking the Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Evolutionary Biology (MEME) in the Netherlands, Germany, USA and Sweden. There, he continued working on the immune-related genes of tardigrades and also investigated human archaeological Philippine samples.

Today, he is working on combining paleontological and modern analyses to study the evolution of the body plan of tardigrades. Aside from tardigrades, other interests of Marc include singing, playing the guitar and piano, as well as learning different languages.

Let’s all say hi and welcome Marc to the Pinoy Scientists fam!
