It’s a new week and of course, we have a new Pinoy Scientist taking over! Meet Elijah Mojares, a PhD candidate in Medical Engineering at the Queen Mary University of London.
Elijah graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he worked on nanofibrous scaffolds for the enrichment of breast cancer stem cells.
Elijah then took up his Master’s in Bioengineering at Imperial College London, graduating with distinction. There, he performed the computational modelling of cellular signalling networks with MATLAB. For his PhD thesis, Elijah is now developing lab-on-chip systems for manufacturing stem cells.
Before entering college, Elijah wanted to become a doctor given his love for biology. This changed in his first year of college, when he realized that he was interested in taking more math and applied science. If Elijah had the chance, he would have minored in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering during his undergraduate years.
Outside of his busy life as a PhD student, Elijah loves playing sports like Ultimate Frisbee and Tag Rugby. He also loves to cook, so much that he has a food IG account. “Lai chia” means “come and eat” in Hokkien and also sounds like Elijah!
Let’s all welcome Elijah to the Pinoy Scientists family!
