Taking over this week is Kiwi Florido, a PhD student taking up the Biological Sciences in Public Health Program at Harvard University in the United States.
Kiwi graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the California State University and then took up her MS in Pathology at Case Western Reserve University. Before starting her PhD, she worked as a Research Assistant and Lab Manager at the Cowan Laboratory of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.
There, Kiwi maintained daily mammalian and stem cell cultures, performed genome editing projects using CRISPR/Cas9 and managed overall laboratory operations. Currently, she is investigating studies in the field of stem cell biology, aging, apoptosis and cancer.
Some fun facts about Kiwi:
- Kiwi grew up in Cebu and speaks Cebuano!
- Her full name is actually Mary Heather Celine Florido, but she has always gone by “Kiwi.” This is because she has 6 other sisters whose names also start with Mary, so her parents decided to give them fruit nicknames. Her other sisters are: Apple, Berry, Peachy, Pears, Cherry and Orange
- Kiwi loves food and runs a foodie account on Instagram. Her mission is to try all the best restaurants in the Boston/Cambridge area. So far, she’s at 60 restaurants and counting! If you love food too, then follow @treslechesfoodies for her home cooked meals and foodie adventures.
Let’s all welcome Kiwi to the Pinoy Scientists fam!
