It’s a new month and we have a new set of Pinoy Scientists for you! This week, we’re starting off with Aiko del Rosario who is currently taking up her Master’s in Marine Science at the University of the Philippines.
Aiko graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics, Major in Materials Science from UP Diliman. Her undergraduate research focused on plasma physics, primarily on the surface treatment of materials with plasma devices. After graduating, she worked as a Failure Analyst Engineer and Patent Analyst before proceeding to her current program.
Now, she is a scholar and graduate assistant under the DOST-PCAARD project “Kuroshio Current Observing System in the Philippines,” where she works on producing ocean current maps of the Luzon Strait based high-frequency radar data.
Did you know: Aiko’s first name on her birth certificate is Aiko (Love). Yes, with parentheses. Her mom wanted Aiko and her dad wanted Love. When Aiko’s mom got mad, her dad tried to fix it at the municipal hall – but the clerk added a parenthesis instead.
Aiko also used to be a frail child, almost half-blind due to cataracts, and with asthma to boot. Funnily enough, she ended up pursuing a field (marine science) with a lot of fieldwork. That being said, she also learned swimming only in college – so it’s never too late to learn!
Everyone say hi and welcome Aiko to the growing Pinoy Scientists fam!
