Taking over this week is Aldrin Gabuya, Resident Astronomer of the Al Sadeem Astronomy Observatory in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

At the observatory, Aldrin contributes sunspot count data, astrometry and photometry of variable stars, asteroids and comets. He also engages in research collaborations tackling the optical monitoring of x-ray binaries and habitable exoplanet hunting. Aldrin is also in charge of the observatory’s educational activities, including astrophotography, workshops and planetarium shows.

Previously, Aldrin graduated from Rizal Technological University with a Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy Technology. He then interned, and later worked as a Science Education Assistant at the Mind Museum in Taguig.

Aldrin’s astronomy photos have been featured in prestigious outlets, including National Geographic Arabia. Outside of work, he enjoys listening to alternative rock, learning new languages and listening to podcasts about many varied topics. Aldrin’s hidden talent is singing, having won a singing contest back in high school.

    During his takeover in 2020, Aldrin had his eyes trained to the sky of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Working as a resident astronomer at the Al Sadeem Astronomy Observatory, Aldrin’s work consisted of astrometry and photometry of variable stars, asteroids, and comets, among others. He also served as an educator, managing various activities such as workshops, and planetarium shows.

    Since then, he has returned to his alma mater - Rizal Technological University - as a Masters student in Astronomy. While pursuing his degree, he also teaches introductory astronomy classes to freshman students.
