This week on Pinoy Scientists, we’re featuring Balik Scientist Ramuel “Ram” Tamargo, PhD, an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Head of the Advanced Materials and Organic Synthesis Laboratory.
Ram graduated from UP Diliman with a BS in Chemical Engineering, after which he pursued a Joint MS-PhD in Chemical Engineering at South Korea’s Yeungnam University.
While taking up his PhD, Ram worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Yeungnam University’s Organic Materials Synthesis Laboratory, where he helped develop more efficient and practical routes for the synthesis of organic compounds. In 2020, he returned to the Philippines as a Balik Scientist under DOST-PCIEERD, and took up his current post as an Assistant Professor at UP Diliman.
In his faculty role, Ram handles courses such as introduction to bioprocess engineering, mathematical methods in chemical engineering, and more. His research interests include the environmentally friendly synthesis of organic and inorganic materials, UV filters and chemical/nanomaterial-based sensors, and natural products among others!
Fun facts about Ram:
- Ram is an avid One Piece fan. Once, during the rare time he would see the sun outside the lab in Korea, he went for a quick side trip since needed to go to Seoul to apply for a Schengen visa. One of the attractions he immediately visited was the now-defunct Cafe De One Piece. You can see how elated he was! He also collects OP figures in his room.
- He likes Korean RnB; his favorite K-RnB artists are Zion T and Crush. One of the first songs he learned to play with his guitar after coming to Korea was “Eat” by Zion T since everybody was listening to that song at that time. On the K-pop side, he is a fan of New Jeans because their music is so easy on the ears. Annyeong, fellow Bunnies!
- Ram is fond of mint chocolate. He is not picky about foods except pineapples in pizza and raisins.
Let’s all say hi to Ram this week!
