Proving that it’s possible to merge art with science is artist, photographer, and illustrator Aissa Domingo from the Zoology Division at the National Museum of the Philippines.

Aissa graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Major in Painting from the University of Santo Tomas. Since 2010, Aissa’s scientific illustrations and photographs of animals, plants, and fossils have been published in local and international scientific journals.

Notably, Aissa led the reconstructive painting of the replica and actual taxidermy specimen of Lolong—the largest crocodile in captivity, measuring at 6.17 meters and weighing a whopping 1,075 kg.

She has also led several workshops on scientific illustration in the Philippines and abroad, and is a member of several organizations like the Philippine Fauna Art Society, Philippine Botanical Art Society and Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.

Some fun facts about Aissa:

  1. She finds refuge in art, books, and music.
  2. She dabbles in taxidermy.
  3. She looks forward to creating more field guides and posters about Philippine flora and fauna.
