Dr. Joan Talubo is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) Department of Community and Environmental Resource Planning!
Joan graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Geodetic Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman and passed the licensure exam soon after. She then worked as a geodetic engineer and as a mapping officer, before heading to UPLB to take her Masters in Environmental Science, minor in Agrometeorology. Her Masters thesis tackled the development of landslide vulnerability indices for communities in Quezon, Philippines.
Joan then joined UPLB as an Assistant Professor, and later undertook her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey through the Newton Agham Fund Scholarship Grant. Her doctoral thesis assessed island socio-ecological resilience for disaster risk and recovery planning in the Philippines.
Here are three fun facts about Joan:
- She finds joy in cooking. It became her stress reliever during the PhD. She learned the basics of baking too, and became a fan of the Great British Bake Off series.
- Running is her regular thing. It relaxes and clears her mind as it is her feet and not her mind that is running. The longest distance she finished is a half-marathon, and she is aiming to complete a full marathon in the near future!
- She loves dogs! Whilst living in the UK, she was on an app called borrowmydoggy wherein she could borrow other people’s dogs and walk them!
This takeover is coordinated in partnership with British Council Philippines.
