This week, we welcome Andrea “Andoi” Salvador, a neuroscience PhD student at the University of Virginia!
Andoi graduated summa cum laude from UP Diliman’s Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB) program, where here thesis focused on detecting major diarrheogenic pathogens. She went on to complete the MBB Master’s program, with her research analyzing the interactions of human proteins called integrins.
Before taking up her PhD, Andoi was a research associate at the UP Marine Science Institute’s Marine Natural Products Laboratory as well as National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology’s (NIMBB) Protein Structure and Immunology Laboratory and Disease Molecular Biology and Epigenetics Laboratory.
Her broad research knowledge was put to good use as an instructor at NIMBB, where she taught an array of both laboratory and lecture classes ranging from molecular biophysics to animal and plant tissue culture.
Since starting her PhD, Andoi has already published in prestigious journals like Nature, Nature Neuroscience, Nature Immunology, Nature Reviews Immunology and Cell.
Some fun facts about Andoi:
- She loves reality TV shows and is currently re-watching some of them (Survivor and Amazing Race fan here!) She even applied for the Amazing Race Philippines with her friend, but they missed out on their coolness
- She’s currently baking sweet goodies and feeding her labmates to alleviate stress induced by finishing her PhD.
- She loves a good sour and a Moscow mule!
Let’s all welcome Andoi to the PinoyScientists fam!
