It’s time to introduce our next Pinoy Scientist! Meet Aeiou Martija, a doctoral researcher at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg.
Aeiou graduated from the BS Biology program of the Ateneo de Manila University, where he analyzed the molecular phylogeny and antibiotic activity of Philippine marine symbiotic bioluminescent bacteria.
After a short stint in med school, Aeiou returned to the laboratory, graduating from the MS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology program of the University of the Philippines Diliman. There, he investigated the regulation of neurite outgrowth and cell death.
For his doctoral research, Aeiou is currently exploring the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying glioblastoma, a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumor.
Some fun facts about Aeiou:
- He took a German language course back in college, even though he had no idea he’d would be coming to Germany several years later.
- He loves to play guitar or piano in his free time
