Meet Manuel Holz, “half-German half-Cebuano” sociologist
He is currently taking up his Ph.D. at Chemnitz University of Technology in a small city in the East of Germany. His research focuses on the quantitative analysis of migration and inequality. For example, how the experience as a migrant (especially from poorer countries) in a post-industrial country (like Germany, the U.S., UK and so on) affects socioeconomic outcomes and wellbeing.
He shares: “I think it is very important to make academics, professionals, teachers or public figures with a migrational background more visible to the public. Especially in those richer countries, where migrants typically hold low levels of education and income… In all of my career path I never had a teacher or a professor who was somehow similar to me, someone I could identify with, who knew about the struggles of migrants. I aspire to be that one day; to be a positive role model for the people who leave their countries in order to make a living abroad. I want to contribute to the image that especially migrants from the lower classes can make it and that the hard work of our parents eventually will be rewarded.”
