Meet Valerie Diane Valeriano, molecular infection biologist

She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at MIMS (Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine) at Umeå University in Sweden. She has a special interest in advanced –omics and meta-omics sequencing technologies and her current research focuses on the understanding of the transmission dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes.

She shares: “My work with microbes took me through the completely diverse spectra of “good bacteria” and “infectious bacteria” in the host gut which utilizes almost the same dynamics at some point for individual strains, but result in different outcomes. Gut microbial ecology seemed like an interesting point-of-view towards understanding systemic approaches of the unknown “organ” that we have: our gut microbiota. It helps in the systemic approach to studying these diseases, including metabolic, immunological and infectious diseases that are caused by bacteria that are recalcitrant to currently available antibiotics.”
