There’s a lot of people who claim to be afraid of bugs, but our first featured Pinoy Scientist on Instagram, Dr. Aimee Dupo, definitely isn’t one of them. In fact, as an entomologist, she studies insects for a living!

Dr. Dupo, or Aims, graduated with a Bachelors degree in Agriculture, major in Entomology from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in 1999. She then pursued a Masters in Entomology, minor in Genetics, graduating in 2001, and then obtained a PhD in Entomology in 2011 (hm, we’re noticing a pattern here)

Aims has described more than 49 species of spiders and 22 species of rice black bugs. Her passion for science and teaching about biodiversity earned her the NAST Outstanding Young Scientist in 2015 and the Bato Balani Many Faces of a Teacher Award in 2017.

Currently, Aims is the UPLB Museum of Natural History’s curator for moths and spiders, as well as a Professor and Graduate School Secretary at UPLB. She also has an Instagram account where she shares beautiful photos of the many weird and wonderful insects she encounters in the field.

We’re truly lucky to have Aims onboard the Pinoy Scientists Instagram this week! Follow our Instagram now to learn more about insects and biodiversity!

P.S: Who can guess what flower Aims is posing with in the photo?
