A woman of many hats, this week’s Pinoy Scientist is Samantha Julia Eala, a lecturer at Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines, research officer at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health (MSPGH), University of Melbourne and a project manager at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH).
Sam completed her Bachelor of Arts in Development Studies specializing in Humanitarian Action and Development Management, graduating Cum Laude from the Ateneo de Manila University. She served as a national network coordinator for Child Rights Network Philippines while simultaneously founding and operating as the Chief Executive Officer of Seedibles Co., a company that provided easy-to-use plant kits. The company was one of the Top 15 Youth Global Entrepreneurs as awarded by the Singapore International Foundation. In 2021, she was awarded a scholarship at the University of Texas at Austin by the US Department of State. As a part of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative, she spent a year at the university as a Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Academic Fellow. She was also a Partnerships, Gender, and Innovations Officer at the United States Agency for International Development ReachHealth.
A development researcher-practitioner, Sam examines how climate change affects women and children, and how this can shape health system policies and programs. She recently graduated as Valedictorian from her Master of Public Health at the University of Melbourne, where she was an Australia Awards Scholar. At present, she is a project manager at ASMPH, a research officer at MSPGH, and a lecturer at Ateneo de Manila University. She is also currently taking her Master of Business Administration at the University of Western Australia.

- Cheese makes her happy! She also loves learning about wine and dreams of someday becoming a sommelier.
- She never says no to a picnic or any excuse to lounge on a blanket with snacks and sunshine.
- She has over 50 go-to karaoke songs, and she’ll sing all of them, no talent fee needed.
