3 Life lessons after doing Scientific Research
Maayong Gabii (Good evening), this is Denx and this is the last post of my Pinoy Scientist takeover.
.
As a young research scientist, I have learned a lot of life lessons from doing scientific research and tonight I’m going to share with you three of these. My first life lesson is that in science you don’t always arrive at an answer right away, and that is okay. Science itself is a process and there is no direct path to acquiring the answer. So be patient and don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember that nature itself is always smarter than us.
.
The second lesson is that science is self-discriminatory. This means that even though we already acquired the best answer to a scientific problem, it is always challenged day by day. Antony Hoare, a senior researcher at Microsoft Corp once said “Scientists try very hard to disprove what they hope is true. When they fail, they have a good reason for believing what they hope is true, and can even convince others of its truth. A scientist always acknowledges the possibility of error and is less likely to be mistaken than one who always claims to be right.
.
The last lesson would be science is also an art. People may associate art with painting, music, and designing but for me, science is art too. Believe it or not, scientist always comes up with a hypothesis through imagination. But unlike the arts, science doesn’t acknowledge subjectivity and feelings. This makes science beautiful! No matter how you approach the problem, you always come up with the same answer. This means that in our universe, there is a universal truth and it’s just waiting for us to unravel.
.
I hope for the one week that I took over the Pinoy Scientist page, you have learned something about medical physics and also got inspired to pursue science as a career. Let’s get connected on my Instagram account @denxybel and see you in the field someday!
