Lights out and away we go! Here to drive us forward into the month of July is Neil Joshua Limbaga, a PhD student at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Sensors Group, Saudi Arabia who earlier this year worked with McLaren Racing of Formula One fame.
Neil completed his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering at Ateneo de Manila University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a specialization in Microelectronics, Software Development & Embedded Systems. Throughout his undergraduate studies, Neil interned and worked for several companies, such as Blooms & Greens, the Ateneo Innovation Center, Western Digital Corp, and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan. After briefly visiting KAUST as a microelectronics intern after his graduation, he entered the university as an MS/PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2023. He specialized in Computer Architecture, Computer Networks & Cyber-physical Systems for his Master’s degree where he was part of the KAUST-McLaren Partnership. Through this collaboration with McLaren Racing, his postgraduate research revolved around using his skills in software development and simulation to address challenges in the motorsports industry.
After having completed his Master’s degree earlier this year, Neil is now working on his PhD at KAUST with the university’s sensors group. Building on his experience with McLaren Racing, his research focus is in integrated wearable systems for high-performance sports and health.
Some fun facts about Neil:
- Grew up as a huge Dwyane Wade fan and still hits the basketball court with friends whenever he gets the chance.
- Used to lead his high school’s CAT Unit as Corps Commander—it’s also where he met his girlfriend, Ashley, who joined as an officer two years after him!
- He’s a proud Bloom – a big fan of the Filipino girl group BINI! He also regularly listens to Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, and One Direction (yes, he still has “Night Changes” on repeat).
