Drawing you into her story this week is Pinoy Scientist Rebecca “Becca” Georgia Yu, a graphic designer and science communicator who specializes in marine science. She is a freelance designer and a Research Associate at the Marine Science Institute (MSI), University of the Philippines.

Becca graduated Cum Laude from Ateneo de Manila University. She completed her BS in Mathematics in 2015, throughout which she maintained her Ateneo Freshman Merit Scholarship. She finished her BFA Information Design degree in 2017. Since then, she has worked at the Marine Science Institute of the University of the Philippines as a Science Communicator and Research Associate while continuing her freelance designer work. Some key accomplishments include the illustration of two children’s books under Anvil Publishing that were released in 2020 and 2022 entitled “That’s It, Pancit!” and “Lucy’s Luck (Ang Kaswertihan ni Lucy)” respectively. In 2020, Becca worked with Clerodendrum PH to design the visuals for their Facebook page of the same name. She was also an Ateneo University Press cover artist until 2023 and redesigned the Ateneo School of Science and Engineering college recruitment brochures, which have been in use since 2018-19.

Becca is a member of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK) and the Philippine Association of Marine Scientists (PAMS). Two years ago, she attended the PAMS 2023: 17th National Symposium on Marine Sciences to present a poster discussing the development of MSI’s publication “Coastal Survey for Citizen Scientists”.

Some fun facts about Becca:

  • She was in the Philippine Daily Inquirer and a radio show when she was 8 years old for winning an international poster-making competition for World Water Day. Her parents kept the original painting.
  • She recently learned to knit and is revisiting her love for crochet, but she has also loved gardening, miniatures, piano, urban sketching and watercolor.
  • She designed her own wedding invitations! They got married in 2022 and places were still opening up after the pandemic so they couldn’t find an artist. Becca decided to just do it herself!
